Essay

The main aim of this project is to learn about her life and show how her example can influence young people today. The research also wants to keep historical memory alive and help students understand the importance of national values.

During the research, we found that her story is not only about the past. It can help solve a modern problem — many young people today do not feel strong responsibility for their country. By learning about real heroes, students can understand what patriotism means and why it is important.

Another result of the project is that students become more interested in history. They start to respect their country and think about their future role in society. This shows that history can be useful in real life.

The uniqueness of this work is that it combines history with modern methods, such as visual materials, timelines, and digital tools. This makes the project more interesting and easier to understand.

In conclusion, the life of Roza Momynova is a strong example for young people. Her bravery helps us learn important values and become responsible citizens.

  1. Introduction

“ On the Eve of the Victory Day (80-81 year (2025-2026), we express boundless gratitude and respect to the war and the labor front veterans, defenders of Leningrad, all those who in the most severe years of difficult trails, sacrificing their health and lives, showed the whole world the enormous resilience of their native Fatherland. We, the children of war veterans, bow our heads to our father and mother, who forever wrote their names in the world annals as heroes-conquerors, warriors-liberators.

Our people made an invaluable contribution to overall Victory. Kazakhstanis fought heroically on all fronts, and almost half of them did not return home. Their courage and unconquerable will allowed to maintain peace and quiet in the world

Our sacred duty is to remember the lessons of that terrible war and to sacredly honor the unprecedented feat of the older generation”

President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart K.Tokaev

I considered it appropriate to start my project with the commandment of our president to the Kazakh people, including Kazakh youth. This topic is very extensive, it has also been talked about for more than 80 years. However, until now, no one knows the names of many of our veterans. There are many Kazakh girls among them. It’s a pity why do we remember them only on the eve of Victory Day?

Theme of my project is: “ The heroic lives of 21 star-wielding heroes of Western Kazakhstan who fought for their homeland”( a study about the hero girl of Western Kazakhstan, Roza Momynova). The reason I chose this topic is that many films about the Great Patriotic War only talk about men, and sometimes about girls of other nationalities. From that moment on, I had a thought: «Why not learn more about Kazakh girls, including our compatriots?» When I told my supervisor about this idea, she supported me and gave me the necessary recommendations. My supervisor organized a meeting with B.S. Boranbayeva, associate professor of the West Kazakhstan State University named after M. Utemisov, Candidate of Historical Sciences, who presented the second edition of her book «Kazakh girls of the West Kazakhstan region who participated in the Great Patriotic War» in this region.

The interview with the professor made a great impression on me. My interest was so great that I started my own research with my supervisor, planning to personally meet with the descendants of our veteran mothers mentioned in the book: R. Momynova and Napiya, who live in Uralsk, and interview them.

  1. Theoretical Part

2.1   The Role of Women during the Great Patriotic War

The Great Patriotic War began at dawn on June 22, 1941, when fascist Germany attacked the Soviet Union. Romania and Italy acted on its side, Slovakia joined them on June 23, Finland on June 25, Hungary on June 27, and Norway on August 16.

The war lasted almost four years and became the largest armed clash in the history of mankind. At the front, stretching from the Barents  to the Black Sea, from 8 to 13 million people all at once fought on different sides at different times, from 6 to 20 thousand tanks and assault guns were used, from 85 to 165 thousand guns and mortars, from 7 to 19 thousand warplanes.

On the fronts of World War II there were about 300 thousand women, among them were our compatriots. Two girls of the Republic – Aliya Moldagulova and Manshuk Mametova, became Heroes of the Soviet Union posthumously; Hiuaz Dospanova deservedly received the title of “Halyq Qaharmany” in Independent Kazakhstan by the Decree of the First President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

During the Great Patriotic War, the role of women in society became extremely important. While most men went to the front, women not only worked in the rear but also directly participated in military actions. They mastered various military professions such as snipers, pilots, signalers, doctors, and nurses, making a significant contribution to the defense of their homeland.

Women fought alongside men and demonstrated great courage and bravery. For example, many female snipers achieved remarkable success in destroying enemy forces. At the same time, women working in the rear supported the army by producing weapons, sewing uniforms, and working in agriculture to provide food supplies.

This period led to a transformation of traditional gender roles. Women became not only caretakers of families but also defenders of the country. Their contribution proved that women are capable of great heroism and responsibility in times of crisis.

2.2 Chronical of courage: 21 heroines of West Kazakhstan Region

It is known that the project is about 21 heroines of the West Kazakhstan region, but we decided that we would focus on all of them briefly and study only Roza Momynova.

Due to the broad scope of the topic and the limitations of the research, it is not possible to provide a deep and comprehensive analysis of the biographies of all 21 heroines within a single project. Therefore, in the theoretical part of the study, greater emphasis is placed on systematizing their wartime roles and heroic deeds rather than describing their life paths in full detail. In this regard, the collected data about the heroines were grouped according to their military duties and roles during the war. As a result, they were divided into 9 main categories: machine gunners, pilots, snipers, signalers, medical workers, paratroopers, women soldiers, drivers, and publishers. This classification allows for a deeper understanding of their roles on the battlefield and provides an opportunity for comparative analysis of their contributions.

Brief description of the groups: (Appendix : Data Visualization. In the theoretical framework of the study, the data visualization method is identified as an important analytical approach. It enables the classification of the 21 heroines according to their wartime roles and provides a structured basis for further analysis in the practical part)

  • Machine gunners – soldiers who operated heavy weapons and played a key role in both offensive and defensive combat operations. [09:27, 14.04.2026] Анар: When referring to machine gunners, one of the most prominent figures that immediately comes to mind is Manshuk Mametova. She is widely known and deeply respected throughout Kazakhstan for her bravery and heroic sacrifice during World War II. Her real name was Mansiya, was born in 1922, 2 October, while her mother affectionately called her “Monshak.” Manshuk Mametova served as a machine gunner and demonstrated exceptional courage on the battlefield, becoming a symbol of patriotism and heroism.Today, her legacy is preserved and honored in many ways. In the city of Oral, there is a museum dedicated to her life and achievements, and the local airport has been named in her honor. These commemorations reflect the enduring respect and recognition of her contribution to the victory and her place in national history.

The image of Manshuk Mametova has inspired not only Kazakh artists but also international creators. According to some sources, an American artist named Steve Garrison created a mural depicting Manshuk Mametova. Although detailed academic information about this artwork is limited, it is considered an example of how her heroic image has been reflected in contemporary visual art.

Such works demonstrate that the legacy of Manshuk Mametova extends beyond national borders and continues to inspire global artistic interpretation. Her image in modern art highlights the importance of preserving historical memory and promoting heroic figures through visual culture.

  • Pilots – members of the air force who carried out aerial missions, including reconnaissance and combat attacks. One of the brave female pilots from the western region of Kazakhstan is Khiyaz Dospanova. She is recognized as one of the first female pilots in the history of Kazakhstan. During the Second World War, she served in an all-female aviation regiment, carrying out reconnaissance and combat missions.

Khiyaz Dospanova demonstrated exceptional courage and determination on the battlefield, faithfully fulfilling her duties under extremely difficult wartime conditions. Her life path represents a clear example of bravery, patriotism, and high professional dedication.

In recognition of her heroic contribution, she was awarded the title “People’s Hero” (Halyk Kakharmany) by the Presidential decree on 7 December 2004.

  • Snipers – highly skilled shooters who eliminated enemy targets with precision and significantly weakened enemy forces. Within the category of sniper women, several heroines from Kazakhstan made significant contributions during the Second World War. Among them are Alima Gabdusheva, Malika  Toktamysheva, and Muslima Galieva-Kozhahmetova.

These women are recognized as part of the group of skilled marksmen who participated in the defense of the country during World War II. Their service reflects courage, precision, and dedication in extremely difficult wartime conditions.

  • Signalers – responsible for maintaining communication between military units, ensuring effective coordination and command. Within the category of signalers, several Kazakh women played an important role during the Second World War. Among them are Nurganym Bayseitova, Mayra Makatova, Gharifa Rakhmetova, Zamikha Nausheva and Agipa  Ghalikyzy.

These women served as communication specialists in military units, ensuring reliable and continuous communication between command structures and frontline forces during World War II. Their work was crucial for maintaining coordination, operational efficiency, and timely transmission of military information under extremely difficult wartime conditions.

It is particularly noteworthy that all five signaler women mentioned above — Nurganym Bayseitova, Mayra Makatova, Garifa Rakhmetova, Zamikha Nausheva, and Agipa Ghalikyzy — survived the hardships of the Second World War and returned safely to their homeland. World War II After the end of the war, they continued to serve their country by contributing to social and public life in peacetime.

This fact demonstrates that they were not only courageous during the war but also remained devoted and responsible citizens in civilian life, reflecting the resilience and dedication of Kazakh women.

  • Paratroopers – deployed behind enemy lines to carry out strategic and tactical operations. Among the Kazakh women who served as paratroopers, Kalamsiya Ermekova holds a significant place. During World War II, she served in airborne units and took part in special military operations, including missions behind enemy lines.

Her service is a clear example of courage, discipline, and dedication under extremely difficult wartime conditions. The life path of Kalamshia Yermekova reflects the strength and resilience of Kazakh women who actively contributed to the defense of their country.

  • Women soldiers – directly participated in combat and performed various military duties. Within the category of women soldiers, Kazakh women who directly participated in combat operations hold a significant place. Among them are Kalampyr Akhmetova, Azima Niyazgalieva, Muslima Umbetova, Umitai Yeskaliyeva, and Kanym Almagambetova.

During World War II, these brave women took part in frontline combat and carried out various military duties, demonstrating courage, resilience, and dedication in defending their homeland.

Their service proves that Kazakh women played an active and important role not only on the home front but also directly in battle, and their heroism remains an essential part of national history.

  • Drivers – transported military equipment, ammunition, and supplies, ensuring logistical support at the front. One of the Kazakh women who served as a driver during the war is Slukhia Sarkulova. During World War II, she worked as a military driver, actively participating in the transportation of ammunition, food supplies, and essential equipment to the front lines.

Her service played an important role in ensuring continuous logistical support for the army and clearly demonstrated her responsibility, endurance, and dedication. The life path of Slukhia Sarkulova reflects the significant contribution of Kazakh women not only in combat roles but also in military logistics and support services.

  • Publishers – prepared wartime newspapers and propaganda materials, helping to maintain soldiers’ morale. Between life and death, publishing a front-line newspaper and distributing it to the soldiers was the most difficult task of all.

Napiya Dauletkalieva, a Kazakh girl from Uralsk, also made her contribution to the publication of the heroic feat of the soldiers who fought for the Motherland on the battlefield in the press and set an example for readers.

hearing about the shortage of printing press workers at the front, Napiya and her friend Umbetalieva Galiya voluntarily went to the front in the summer of 1942. In 1945, he returned home safely and worked in the Printing House No. 10 named after Gabdulla Tokay in Uralsk. He passed away on November 14, 2012.

I am proud that we were lucky enough to meet one of the two sons of the generation left behind, the youngest Bulat, and hear the experiences of the heroine with our own ears.

  •          Medical workers – provided first aid to wounded soldiers and contributed greatly to saving lives on the battlefield. Within the category of medical service heroines, Assiya Galymova, Rabiga Zainullina, and Roza Momynova hold a significant place.

During World War II, they served on the front lines as medical workers, providing first aid to wounded soldiers and making a substantial contribution to saving lives.     Despite extremely difficult and dangerous conditions, they carried out their duties with great responsibility, placing the preservation of human life as their primary goal.

Rabiga Zainullina was a remarkable woman who mastered three military specialties. She was awarded the medal “For Combat Merit” for her bravery. She completed the war near Simferopol and returned home on August 20, 1945. Having served as a machine gunner, nurse, and signaler, she participated in battles on two different fronts. The veteran passed away on October 23, 2021, at the age of 98.

Their service and heroism demonstrate that Kazakh women played an important role not only in combat but also in saving human lives, making their contribution an essential part of national history.

2.3 A figure in the Shadow History: Roza Momynova

The great pride of the Soviet people was the brave female doctors, who became intercessors of human souls during the terrible war years and fought valiantly. Among them, it is clear that if anyone knows about Roza Momynova, the daughter of a Kazakh captain doctor in a soldier’s gray overcoat, someone does not know.

Roza Momynova was born in 1919 in the village of Zhympity, Ural region. She grew up alone in the family. Later, his parents moved to the city of Uralsk (formerly Sennaya , now Akhmirava Street). After graduating from the 7th grade of Secondary School at the meat processing plant (No. 33), Rosa was admitted to the four-year school of paramedic (now Medical College) in the Urals in 1934. In 1938, the girl, a doctor who graduated with a degree in dental treatment, came to the village of Fedorovka and got a job. After working in the village for a year, he comes to Almaty to apply to the Medical Institute. Being late for the exam, Rosa gets a job in Almaty city Polyclinic No. 1. On September 27, 1941, he voluntarily went to the front. He becomes a doctor in a military hospital. Rosa, who served in a field hospital, often went to the front line and carried the wounded out from under fire. For such exploits, he was awarded the order of the Red Star (1943), medals «for military valor» (1943), «for the defense of Moscow» (1944). M. was seriously injured in February 1945 and was admitted to the hospital in Kazan. Unable to recover from a serious injury, she died on the 20th  of May in 1944. She is buried at the arsk Cemetery in Kazan. In March 2016, the descendants of Roza Momynova, who lived a moral life for a short time in the city of Uralsk, laid flowers and bowed to the grave of the warrior Momynova, who became a martyr in Kazan.

The descendants of the Kazakh girl of the heart of the enemy and the defender of this project concern me and my supervisor, as well as the proposal: to give the name of our heroine to Sennaya (now Akhmirova) Street, where she lived, or to the current school No. 33, where she was educated, to the current Ural Medical College, where she studied to break human souls in a terrible war. It is a pity that the name of our heroine was not even included in the list on the monument in the «Eternal Flame», where the names of our great-grandparents were written in the city of Uralsk. Let him engrave in gold letters the name of a heroic person who was overshadowed by history.

2.4 The Concept and Importance of Patriotism

Patriotism is a person’s love, respect, and loyalty to their homeland. It is not only a feeling but also a value that is expressed through actions. A patriotic person knows the history of their country, respects its culture, and strives to contribute to its development.

During World War II, Kazakh heroic girls demonstrated true patriotism. For example, Aliya Moldagulova and Manshuk Mametova sacrificed their lives for their Motherland and became symbols of courage and bravery. Their heroism serves as an inspiring example for today’s youth.

Today, the importance of patriotism is even greater. In the era of globalization, every young person should feel responsibility for the future of their country. Patriotism encourages young people to love their homeland, pursue education, and be useful to society. It also strengthens national unity and contributes to the stable development of the country.

Forming patriotic values in the younger generation is one of the main tasks of schools, families, and society. By promoting the heroic deeds of these brave girls, we can instill a sense of love and respect for the Motherland in young people. This helps to raise conscious, responsible, and patriotic citizens.

In conclusion, the lives of Manshuk Mametova and Roza Momynova serve as a school of courage, responsibility, and patriotism for the younger generation. Their example encourages young people to become brave, conscious, and devoted citizens.

2.5 Educational Value of Heroic Women’s Deeds

The heroic deeds of women during the war serve as an important example for future generations. Their lives teach us courage, resilience, and determination.

These heroines inspire young people to love their country and to be strong in difficult situations. They show that success can be achieved through perseverance and dedication.

Moreover, promoting historical figures helps preserve national values and cultural memory. Honoring these heroes means keeping their legacy alive and passing their spirit on to future generations.

Manshuk Mametova and Roza Momynova were the only daughters in their families, yet they made a brave decision to defend their Motherland. Despite their gentle nature, they placed the future of their country above their personal safety during a time of great danger.

Their lives are a powerful example for today’s youth. First of all, they demonstrated a high level of responsibility. Even as the only children in their families, they did not stay aside but chose to fulfill their duty to their country. This reflects true patriotism.

Secondly, their courage and determination teach young people not to be afraid of difficulties and to stay confident in their goals. They remained true to their principles in any situation.

Finally, these heroic girls inspire young people to love their homeland, pursue education, and contribute to society. They were not only brave in war but also strong in spirit.

Moreover, the heroism of these brave girls teaches young people unity, humanity, and spiritual strength. They became role models not only on the battlefield but also through their life principles.

In conclusion, the bravery of these heroines is an important tool in educating the younger generation. Through their example, we can raise patriotic, courageous, responsible, and conscious citizens.

  1. Practical Part

In this practical part, the project applies digital and interactive methods to study the 21 heroic girls from West Kazakhstan, including Momynova. The aim is not only to collect historical data but also to analyze and present it using modern digital tools, making the research interactive and engaging for students.

3.1 Data Collection and Digital Archive

A comprehensive digital archive was created, containing biographies, photos, articles, and scanned documents about all 21 heroic girls. Special attention was given to Momynova, whose materials were organized in a separate folder. This digital archive served as the main data repository for the project, allowing easy access and systematic organization of historical information.

As part of the data collection process, an important meeting was organized with Professor B. S Boranbayeva, the author of the book “Kazakh Girls of Western Kazakhstan in the Great Patriotic War.” During the meeting, the professor shared valuable historical information and presented the student with a signed copy of her book. This meeting became an important primary source for the research.

In addition, information about the descendants of Roza Momynova and veteran Napia was collected. Later, face-to-face interviews were conducted with them, where detailed information about the life, character, and heroism of these individuals was obtained.

During the field research, the student had the opportunity to see original historical items with their own eyes, including photographs, medals, and personal belongings of the veteran. These materials helped to better understand the historical context and added authenticity to the research.

All collected data, including interview notes, photos, and scanned materials, were organized into a digital archive. The archive was structured into sections such as biography, visual materials, and historical evidence. This digital format allows the preservation of valuable information and makes it accessible for future study.

3.2 Interactive Map

As part of the digital archive, an interactive map was created based on the collected data. The map presents important locations connected with the life and heroism of Roza Momynova and other heroines of Western Kazakhstan.

The information used for the map was gathered during the research process, including materials from books, archival sources, and especially data obtained from meetings and interviews with experts and descendants. These real-life sources made the map more reliable and meaningful.

The interactive map includes key places such as the birthplace, places of study, and important historical locations. Each point on the map contains additional information, photos, and short descriptions. This allows users to explore the life of the heroine step by step.

The purpose of creating the map is to present historical information in a modern and visual way. It helps students better understand the geographical and historical context and increases their interest in the topic.

In conclusion, the interactive map is an important part of the project. It combines traditional historical research with digital technology and makes the learning process more engaging and accessible.

3.3 Timeline

A chronological timeline was created to display key events in the lives of the heroic girls. For example, Momynova’s birth, her period of heroism, and the awards or recognitions she received are presented in order. The timeline provides a clear and logical structure, making it easier for students to understand historical sequences.

In the process of creating the timeline, information about the life and heroic path of Roza Momynova was collected from multiple reliable sources. The main source of information was historical books, which provided basic biographical data and key events.

In addition, valuable primary data was obtained through interviews with the descendants of the veteran. During these interviews, personal letters, military orders, photographs, and newspaper publications were presented and analyzed. These materials helped to verify historical facts and made the timeline more accurate and reliable.

A significant part of the research also included visual and documentary evidence. Photographs of the heroine’s personal items, medals, and clothing were studied during the field research. Furthermore, an important emotional and historical detail was added when the descendants shared a photograph showing the search and discovery of the veteran’s burial place in Kazan and their act of placing flowers there. This moment was included in the timeline as evidence of living memory and respect for the heroine.

All collected data was then organized chronologically to form a clear timeline of key life events. Each stage of her life is supported by documented evidence, ensuring the reliability and authenticity of the research. The detailed timeline is presented in  Appendix C.

In conclusion, the timeline was constructed by combining book sources, archival materials, and oral history, making it a well-supported and meaningful part of the digital archive.

3.4 Data Visualization  (Survey Results and Analysis)

As part of the data visualization section, a written survey was conducted among students and teachers to determine their knowledge about the heroines of the Great Patriotic War, including Roza Momynova.

The survey included three questions:

  1. Are you familiar with the heroic girls of West Kazakhstan?
  2. Do you know about Momynova and her achievements?
  3. Do you support the idea of heroism in girls?

The results of the survey were analyzed and presented in form of a bar chart (see figure 1)

According to the findings, approximately 90% of respondents had heard about female war heroes in general. However, none of the participants had information about Roza Momynova.

This result clearly shows that although general knowledge about World War II heroines exists, awareness of regional heroines is very low. The data highlights a gap in historical knowledge among students and teachers.

In conclusion, the survey results emphasize the importance of promoting local historical figures through education. The visualization of the data (charts and diagrams) helped to clearly present this issue and support the aim of the research project.

  1. Conclusion

In conclusion, the study of the heroic lives of the 21 star-awarded heroines of Western Kazakhstan has shown that their courage and sacrifice played a significant role in the victory and in shaping national identity. In particular, the life and bravery of Roza Momynova demonstrate true patriotism, resilience, and devotion to the Motherland.

This research proves that the heroism of these women is not only a part of history but also a powerful educational resource for the younger generation. Their examples inspire students to develop a sense of responsibility, courage, and love for their country.

Furthermore, the project highlights the importance of preserving historical memory through modern approaches, including digital tools and research methods. By studying and promoting the legacy of these heroines, we contribute to strengthening national values and cultural awareness.

Overall, the findings confirm that the legacy of the heroic girls of Western Kazakhstan remains highly relevant today. Their lives serve as a moral guide for young people, encouraging them to become active, educated, and patriotic citizens who are ready to contribute to the future of their country.

Recommendations and Final Statement

During the research, we came to an important conclusion: despite being the only child in her family and knowing that her parents would not allow her to go to war, Roza Momynova made a brave and independent decision to join the фронт, demonstrating remarkable courage and determination. She risked her own life, saved many people from death, and heroically sacrificed herself in the line of duty.

This is not only an act of bravery but also a legacy entrusted to future generations. We consider her heroism and name as a spiritual heritage passed down to us, and we believe it is our responsibility to preserve and promote it.

In this regard, we would like to propose the following:

  • To name Secondary School No. 33 or the medical college where she studied after Roza Momynova;
  • To name the former Sennaya Street, now known as Akhmirova Street, where she spent her childhood, in her honor;
  • To include her name on the memorial monuments located near the Eternal Flame in Oral.

It is especially regrettable that her name is still not properly recognized and included among other honored heroes. Therefore, we sincerely hope that our proposal will be carefully considered and supported.

In conclusion, the heroism of Roza Momynova must never be forgotten. Honoring her name is not only a tribute to the past but also a meaningful legacy for the future.
